Custom Software
Software built around how your business actually operates, rather than a process reshaped to fit a product.
Businesses commission custom software when the off-the-shelf option would force them to change how they work in ways that cost more than the licence saves. That is a real and common situation — but it is worth being honest that it is not every situation. We will tell you when a configured product would serve you better than a build.
What this covers
Software built around how your business actually operates, rather than a process reshaped to fit a product.
- Requirements discovery and process mapping
- Internal tools and operational systems
- Workflow and approval engines
- Reporting and business intelligence
- Legacy system replacement
- Integration with existing infrastructure
- Training, documentation and rollout
Where custom builds usually go wrong
Requirements gathered from managers only. The people who use a system daily know where the real friction is. Systems specified without them get quietly worked around.
Automating a broken process. Encoding a bad workflow in software makes it permanent and harder to change. Sometimes the correct deliverable is a better process and considerably less code.
No plan for the transition. Data migration, parallel running and training are usually where custom projects actually fail, and they are usually the parts nobody budgeted for.
Built to be unmaintainable. Software nobody but the original vendor can modify is a liability dressed as an asset.
How we build it
- Discovery. We sit with the people doing the work, map the current process honestly, and identify what genuinely needs building.
- Design and plan. Architecture, interface design and a phased delivery plan with costs against each phase.
- Incremental build. Working software in front of your team early and often, so course corrections happen while they are still cheap.
- Migration and rollout. Data migration, parallel running where sensible, training and a support period through the transition.
Technologies we work with
- Backend: Node.js, Python, PHP, Go
- Frontend: React, Next.js, Vue
- Data: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis
- Integration: REST, GraphQL, webhooks, message queues
- Infrastructure: AWS, GCP, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes
What you get
- Software matched to your actual operating process
- Source code, infrastructure and documentation you own
- A migration completed rather than described
- Trained users and written operating guidance
- A codebase another team could pick up
Frequently asked questions
How do we know custom is the right choice?
Discovery answers this before you commit to a build. If a configured off-the-shelf product would do the job for materially less, we will say so — that answer costs us a project and saves you a great deal more.
What does it cost?
Custom software is priced by scope and complexity, so a number without discovery would be invented. What we can commit to is a fixed-price discovery that produces a real estimate you can take to your board.
Can you integrate with our existing systems?
Usually, yes — including older systems without modern APIs, where we work with database-level integration or file-based exchange. We assess this during discovery rather than assuming it.
What happens if we want to bring it in-house?
The code, infrastructure and documentation are yours throughout. We build so that a competent team can take over, and we support the handover properly when you want one.
How we start
Every engagement starts with a short, fixed-scope conversation. You leave with a plan and a price whether or not you continue with us.
